Kids and Cubs is a delightful collection of reminiscences of the happy childhood of the author and her family in rural Kazakhstan (then part of the USSR). It
describes their life amidst nature and a collection of animals that they took care of, including a pair of wolves, a Siberian stag, a fox, a tiger and a stallion.
The stories are full of warmth and humor and the personalities of the author, her parents, her sisters (Sonya, Yulia, and Natasha) and their pets, are charmingly
described. The stories also exemplify life lessons of friendship, courage, and fortitude that will stay with the reader for a long while after reading them.
This edition includes timelines of the author’s life and the original year of publication that provide the literary, historical, and cultural context of the book.

Children's books are something that I am always keen to get my hands on. They emit such happy and positive vibes and are always a welcome distraction from our everyday stressy routines. Kids and Cubs is one such book.
Written originally in 1925 in Russian, it was later translated into English and many more languages and was loved not only by children but was also cherished by adults all around the world.
The book 'Kids and Cubs' is based on the Author's (Olga Perovskaya) childhood. The book is set up in rural Kazakhstan(a part of USSR at that time). It revolves around her life with her parents and three sisters, Sonya, Yulia, and Natasha. The author also shares with her readers her memories of the animals that were under her family's care which included a pair of wolves, a Siberian stag, a fox, a tiger, and a stallion.
The book is divided into 5 chapters, all of them beautifully weaved. Most of the book is all bright and happy and of course fun to read but one can also sense a bit of sadness at certain moments which makes the stories even more real because life is not all cheery and happy all the time.
Talking about the storytelling, Olga is an amazing storyteller, one can actually feel every emotion that she has tried to convey in her book. The writing style is simple, so, the kids won't find the book difficult or monotonous to read. The book enhances the imagination and paints a bright clear picture in the reader's head.
Some of the scenes in the book seemed to be a little unrealistic but we can ignore this fact as it is a children's book and, to hold a child's interest, exaggeration is needed!
COVER & TITLE: The cover is perfect for a children's book, full of colors. Pictures of animals clearly give readers an insight into the story. The title 'Kids and Cubs' is apt as most of the book is about the relationship between the kids and the animals that they take care of. There couldn't have been a better title.
All in all, this was a fun read! You must give this book a try if it sounds like your cup of tea.
